Post by: Natalie Solis, MTS Student, HDS Office of Admissions Graduate Assistant

Mikaela here! As the editor of the HDS Admissions Blog for the past two years, it is almost time to say goodbye to all of you as my degree program draws to an end this May. Housing has a huge influence on our academic lives as students, and so I wanted to leave you with a comprehensive series on housing resources as the last blog series I will supervise before handing over my role to another capable Graduate Assistant. Our next post in the series will feature resources and strategies for finding off-campus housing, a popular choice among HDS students.

Hello, my name is Natalie and I am a graduate assistant at the HDS Office of Admissions. In this blog post, I will provide an overview of the on-campus housing options at Harvard. On-campus housing is very convenient for students because it is usually within walking distance to campus and includes community events. While there are no HDS specific dorms on campus, there are still many options for on-campus housing. The closest thing to an HDS specific graduate housing program is the Center for the Study of World Religions (CSWR), which is right across the street from Andover Hall. The CSWR is a residential community that fosters living and learning with a focus on world religions. In order to live at the CSWR for the academic year, students need to submit a short application to the CSWR by April 15th. You can find more information about the apartments at the CSWR and the application form on the CSWR website. The deadline to apply for CSWR housing has now passed for 2019, but it is important that you keep this deadline in mind if you are interested in the CSWR and would like to apply in the future.

As our newly-enrolled HDS class begins making preparations for their relocation to Cambridge, they might be debating the merits of the various neighborhoods around HDS’s campus, which is situated near the Cambridge/Somerville border. Over the next week, various current students will weigh in regarding why their neighborhood is the best of the bunch. We hope this will give our new students a better sense of what each Cambridge/Somerville neighborhood has to offer as they find a new place to live!

If you are reading this, congratulations, because you are now one step closer to living in the best neighborhood in Greater Boston.

There’s a story that my mom often likes to tell about me about being homesick. I was eight years old, and we were taking our very first family vacation out of state, to Walt Disney World. Being from Ohio, it ended up being much cheaper to drive the two of us to Florida and back, even with an overnight stay in North Carolina. I should say that prior to this vacation, I had been away from home for many extended periods of time, attending weeklong summer camps and spending weeks at a time with my grandparents. Being away from home was not new to me, but being this far from home became a problem. At eight years old, with my mom by my side, on my way to Walt Disney World, in a strange hotel room in North Carolina, I became massively homesick. There is no other way to describe it besides to say that I had a complete meltdown. I cried the entire night, begging my mom to take us back home and scrap the entire trip. It was a mess.

It’s hard to think about being homesick, especially as an adult. For a child, it makes sense. New surroundings, being away from people you know, etc., etc…But as an adult—at Harvard, no less—this is something we should be over. Right? Continue reading →
